What Can (and Can't) Junk Haulers Take? A Complete List

Whether you're clearing out a garage, renovating a room, or downsizing an entire home, one of the first questions people ask is: what will a junk removal company actually pick up? The good news is that most professional junk haulers accept a wide range of items. But there are a few important exceptions worth knowing about before you schedule a pickup.

Here's a straightforward breakdown of what's typically fair game and what you'll need to handle separately.

Items We Commonly Haul Away

Professional junk removal covers far more than just old sofas and broken chairs. Below are the most common categories we handle on a daily basis.

Furniture

This is the single most common category we see. Couches, loveseats, dining tables, chairs, desks, bed frames, dressers, nightstands, bookshelves, entertainment centers, and office furniture are all items we regularly pick up. It doesn't matter if they're in good condition or completely falling apart. If you can't use it, we'll take it.

Appliances

Old or broken appliances take up valuable space and are notoriously difficult to move on your own. We haul refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, stoves, ovens, microwaves, window AC units, water heaters, and more. Appliances in working condition are often donated or recycled rather than sent to a landfill.

Yard Waste

Landscaping projects generate a surprising amount of debris. We handle tree branches, brush, soil, sod, old fencing, patio furniture, shed demolition and removal, landscape timbers, and general green waste. If your yard project left behind a mess, we can clear it out quickly.

Construction Debris

Renovation and remodeling work creates piles of material that standard trash services won't touch. We take drywall, lumber, plywood, concrete, brick, tile, old flooring, cabinetry, countertops, light fixtures, and other construction leftovers. Whether it's a small bathroom remodel or a full gut job, we can handle the cleanup.

Electronics

E-waste is growing every year, and most of it shouldn't end up in a landfill. We pick up old TVs (including bulky CRTs), desktop computers, laptops, monitors, printers, scanners, cables, routers, and other electronic equipment. These items are sent to certified e-waste recycling facilities whenever possible.

Miscellaneous

Some of the bulkiest and most awkward items to get rid of fall into this catch-all category. Mattresses and box springs, hot tubs, exercise equipment (treadmills, ellipticals, weight machines), pianos, pool tables, swing sets, trampolines, and large toys or playsets are all items we commonly remove. If it's too big for the curb, give us a call.

Items Junk Haulers Typically Can't Take

For safety and regulatory reasons, there are certain materials that most junk removal companies, including ours, are unable to transport. These generally include:

  • Hazardous waste — paint, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, motor oil, and chemical cleaners
  • Asbestos-containing materials — requires licensed abatement professionals
  • Medical waste — needles, syringes, pharmaceuticals, and biohazard materials
  • Certain refrigerants — appliances containing Freon may need special handling by a certified technician before removal
  • Propane tanks — full or partially full tanks are considered hazardous cargo
  • Ammunition and explosives — firearms, fireworks, and related materials require specialized disposal

If you have hazardous items that need to be disposed of, contact your local household hazardous waste facility. In Orange County, the OC Waste & Recycling program offers free drop-off events throughout the year. Riverside County residents can reach out to the Riverside County Department of Waste Resources for similar programs.

Eco-Friendly Disposal: What Happens to Your Junk?

One of the most common concerns we hear is whether everything just ends up in a landfill. At The Junk House, we're committed to responsible disposal. We divert up to 60% of the items we collect away from landfills through a combination of strategies.

Gently used furniture, clothing, and household goods are donated to local charities and nonprofit organizations throughout Orange County and the Inland Empire. Metals, electronics, cardboard, and other recyclable materials are sorted and sent to appropriate recycling centers. Only items that truly have no second life are disposed of at licensed facilities.

When you hire The Junk House, you're not just clearing space. You're making a more sustainable choice.

Not Sure? Just Ask!

Every job is a little different, and we understand that not every item fits neatly into one of the categories above. If you're unsure whether we can take something, the easiest thing to do is reach out. Call or text us at (949) 743-7815 and we'll let you know right away. There's no obligation and no judgment — we've seen it all.
